Got a 1996 F250 7.3 XL. It has 74k on it and having tranny problems. The overdrive light is flashing and is shifting hard. There's no mods to the truck what so ever. Any help?
What is different about these codes that loaner code readers will not read them.
More important how does one now that all the available codes have been read.
As George Carlin said some where in the world is the worlds worst doctor and somebody has an appointment with them for tommorow morning.
I figure the same goes for dealers and independent shops.
There are some codes that the EPA mandates must be read by any generic reader. All other codes (and this includes most transmission codes) will not be read by a generic reader. What makes them different is that the software in the PCM won't report anything but generic codes to a generic reader. If the reader doesn't know the secret handshake it won't get all of the codes. Generic readers don't have the secret handshake.
I'm having issues getting my transmission codes read. I have a 97 f250 7.3 I had hard shifts from 1st to 2and and some erratic shifts like to eairly. I have an innova 5610 scan tool. It has ford enhanced ability so its supposed to be able to read transmission codes. I have the truck running and when I plug it in it kills the truck. Then reads and says not dtc detected. My speedometer bounces slightly when driving but from what I read I'm not sure the vss would cause my issues. I've seen you state many times get the codes read first. But I'm having trouble doing that. Could my pcm be bad? How do you check if it is? I mean the truck starts and runs and the scanner will read with koeo but not koer
The 1997 diesels were odd. The department that was responsible for the diesel software at that time wasn't the sharpest tool in the drawer.
You may have better results with Forscan. You can download it free at www.forscan.org. You'll need an ELM 327 adapter to plug into the OBD port. I got one from Amazon for less than $30.

Thanks for the info I'll try starting with putting the reader in first. There is not any codes showing when in the koeo.

it does start with the reader plugged In but still no codes and when I try to get it to read the pcm or any module it tells me cant communicate with it make sure dlc is connected good wich it is and turn key on wich it is bc its running. I think it's just the innova 5610 is junk I'm going to try a blue tooth and an app like torque or for scan I just dont want to pay a shop to read it if they arnt actually gonna be able to read it but still get charged for it
Yes, it will. Except I am not 100% sure on a 1997 diesel, those were oddballs.
How would I know if the pcm is bad? The truck starts and runs? Would a 6 position switch mess with the tranny or the ability to communicate with the pcm. The scan tool even my cheap one reads when the first plug in and say no codes detected. With the better tool after it reads and says no codes detected I try to have it communicate with other modules but it is unable to communicate with anything. I'm just trying to figure out if it's the tool or my pcm
