I have a 2001 F350 both heads are shot and I would like to swap the motor to something other than a V10 what other Motors will bolt up to the my automatic transmission I am probably going carbureted so wiring is not an issue
Yes sir, I should have qualified that by saying the only other gasoline engines are smaller in displacement.
And swapping to a diesel would be a lot more trouble than it's worth in my opinion. It would be much easier and probably cheaper to buy a different truck than to change to a different type engine other than a Triton.
Drill and tap for spark plugs where the glow plugs go
Oddly enough.... the great-great-grand-uncle (once removed at least, obligatorily drunk, and who I'm sure was a hit at family reunions) of the 6.0 and 6.4 was crazy enough to have spark plugs in a diesel engine:
The Farmall MD was the diesel version of the M. The MD was started on gasoline, by pulling a lever which enlarged the combustion chamber (to lower the compression) and closed the circuit for the spark plugs. After the engine was warm, it was switched over to diesel.
Apparently it had a separate set of valves that when opened reduced cylinder compression, letting you start the tractor on gas via a carb, then you'd work a set of levers that would close the decompression valves, add diesel, and cut off the gas.
Between this and using a gas pony motor, old school diesels were proof engineers are absolutely insane In the coolest way possible, in the sense that if your motor needs help, put another one on it, or built a second one in to it, either works.
