Towing a couple thousand pounds with a 92, 302 with an e4od and the engine light came on. Truck started shifting hard and power seemed to dip a little off and on. Pulled the codes and got 634-manual lever position sensor...guessing this is the neutral switch. Truck idles a little high in park and neutral but otherwise starts and runs. Put it in reverse and engine immediately started running rough and eventually died.
My idea is that you have something wrong with either the Manual Lever Position Switch (MLPS - some people still call this a neutral switch) or a problem with the wiring to that sensor.
A day after the original problem, the issue seems to have disappeared. Truck starts, runs and warms up normally...cycles all of the gears with no problem and shifts normally. No CEF anymore either.
Wondering now if its an intermittent MLPS problem or if it was an overheating problem. The transmission has a slight leak...never enough to leave a puddle, but the underside is always wet from bell housing to the back of the pan. Fluid levels seems normal and I've had the shop top them off/check it every time its been in for service.
Could code 634 be caused by an overheating issue? This is the only time ive had this issue and wondering if the fact I was towing a trailer with OD turned off is what caused the issue. The CEF didnt come on until I'd been towing the load for about 10 miles in stop and go traffic through a hilly area of town.
Sorry-meant CEL. Thanks for the feedback...sounding more and more like the mlps. Transmission didn't slip or anthing but thought it'd be worth the ask.
Got another update...got home from work and gave it a try. Truck starts up fine idles and warms up normally. Cycles all of the gears with no issue and shifts smooth. After driving around for about 10 minutes the CEL came back on and the transmission went into limp mode...shifting hard...when i put it in reverse the motor immediately ran rough for a second and then died. Did the same thing when put down in First. Idles faster in park and neutral.
Let the truck cool off a few hours and then restarted it. No cel, no rough idle, no hard shifting or stalling issues...so it seems temp related.
