My truck is showing P0705 which is Transmission Range Sensor Circuit Malfunction. Basically Neutral Safety Switch. Only starts in park or neutral. Shift lever has very little play in it and needle points to the right gear. Reverse lights come on in reverse. Everything seems to be fine. I don't want to throw parts at it and hope things improve. Part is only $53 but I hate to spend it if that's not the problem. Haven't seen any wires cut or chafed. Haynes manual (for what it's worth) doesn't go into a lot detail since everyhting mentioned above is fine. Any ideas or has anyone had a similar problem? I have cleared the code and it comes back. Overdrive light flashes sometimes for a few seconds when I start the truck. Overdrive works fine after light stops flashing. Recently changed transmission fluid and filter but the problem was there before that.
You need to monitor the output of the switch through the scanner to know for sure. It is probably a bad sensor, it uses a series of connections and switches over 4 wires to communicate with the ecm what gear you have selected. They are fairly common to fail.
