Left brake light works at times and sometimes not.
the issue is traced at the Turn Signal switch. I found the switch to be very dirty and it seems to have an extra flat dirty copper shim under the cam. I think it is causing the intermittent failure. I have never opened this blinker up before and don't know how it should look. Please, any help is appreciated.
1978 tilt steering column no cruise. I looked through 6 pages of the search and missed what I need. I plan to clean the grime out of it.
I finally made time to work on my turn signal. i cleaned everything up. The four contacts (rivets) inside my assembly looked good. However, the Whiskers on the cam did not. The cam whiskers had been rubbed to half there thickness.
I purchased a Dorman turn signal repair cam for around $11. The cams have very poor reviews, so I knew an adjustment would be needed. That is if it would work at all. After a few tries and some measurements, I found a solution.
First, I noticed that when installed the cam seemed to not turn freely, there was a drag under the cam.
Second, I measured the radial length of the whiskers (from pivot point to end) and compared to the contacts. Two whiskers farthest away from the steering shaft were 1/16" too long.
After cutting the two whiskers as needed, the cam fits and functions great. I also placed the centering spring in its correct location.
I am happy to be able to keep my OEM turn signal assembly. The $11 is a good investment even with the added alteration that was done.
