I've got a 4x4 1983 with 4:10 gears IFS 4 speed standard reg cab dual tanks short bed with 300 straight six I'm rebuilding and was wondering what I should do for exhaust. I'm getting an Offie 4 barrel intake and manifold and a header, but what do I do after that. I have second truck also with a 300 (still stock carb and intake.) It has a cheap glass pack and one 45 degree bend so the tip is right in front of passenger read tire. It sounds good. but the '83 that I'm currently working on is my baby and will be a little more aggressive, I want it to sound like it too. What will help me squeeze more torque out and would give me the best deep rumbly sound that borderlines on too loud. I want to be that one guy, that when i fix my truck and get it to run again. (first time in six years if this works) then the whole neighborhood will hear about it. Any reasonably unreasonable ideas?

Bearded Rabbit, exhaust sound is a very subjective subject... what sounds good to you may sound horrible to someone else. Here is a link to a thread which might give you some ideas: https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/7...und-clips.html
When I lived in CT the guy across the street from me had that car and speaker on top of it. He was a member of a blues band and they would show up in it.
Beard one, is the header 3+2? If so you going to make a Y pipe or run 2 mufflers?
I made a Y pipe and used a short turbo muffler on a FJ40 Toyota and thought it sounded good.
Not v8 good but good for a 238 six the Toy came with.

I havent got a header yet, so idk. it could be, thats why i was asking. mines not a v8 either. i tried swapping in a 302 but it just wasnt right. Nothing but straight sixes for me.
What about a turbo... how much would that cost me? would that be worth the effort? my 4x4 probably only get used one or two weekends a month.
Because of the age of our trucks I don't know if anyone makes a kit for them so you would have get all the parts to make it work.
That has its own issues. My guess is you don't know that much about turbo or super charging a motor.
Now don't get me wrong both have good & bad about them but it is more then just bolt on and go.
If running a carb it only adds to the issues of installing either of the above. Also most turbo's don't work too well with headers.
There are books on this and guessing a Google search would turn out a bunch of things also.
When the time comes for that v4 carb don't go to large of a carb because it will not run right/good.
No what i have done on these two trucks plis the 88 ranger i used to have is the sum total of my automotive experiance. ive got the tools and aptitude tho. I wrench on airplanes for a living but a P&W 4000 is not a 300 six, my biggest question is cost.... would it be worth the cost to turbo my weekend wheeler that stil has open difs?
I think I would get the motor running right and the drive train to put the power to the ground first.
Some call the 300 six a tractor motor, it will pull anything just not fast. It is also used in wood chippers so it is a work horse.
Early Jeeps & Toyota L/C used a straight 6 and would go anywhere if they had traction. Close them open diffs and have fun.
Then over time look into a turbo.

bTW my project is a 300/T18 and will be a back up to pull my car trailer. It will not be fast but will get the job done.
I would like to, but idk how. im just one guy. do dude son the form get together to help each other work on trucks? its completly stock minus the gun rack i welded up in high school. then i would need onboard air, how much woukd that locker effect road habbits? isnt thisbsupposed to be putting exhaust on it? hasnt run in almost 7 years now. ill be impressed if it wver does again. thisball just feels like a pipe dream that keeps soaking up my money.
If they make one then sure but I only know of air for aftermarket.
Yea got a little off track but you started it by asking about turbos. More power in no good if you don't have traction and why the lockers first.
If you have them you may not need or want t h e turbo.
