I won't happen. Two different engines. The six will always sound kinda "whiney". But, the six has more low-end torque and will outlast any V-8 out there. There are mods available for the six but you'll never be able to get that V-8 rumble without a V-8. Sorry.
My 80 F-100 with a six has 180,000+ miles on it and starts every morning, uses very little oil, and can still pull stumps with ease. Find a V-8 that can do that! Have fun - BUBBA

I have a 300 with a pacesetter header in a 79 f150 the header has dual outlets to 2 1/4 id pipes with dual glasspacks and pipes run out under the bumper and its loud as heck. Louder than v8s ive had with the same setup i think with flowmasters would sound real good at idle sounds just like a v8 when your on it more like a harley. It also has a comp cam offenhauser 360 and a edelbrock 600. Really runs awesome for an i6 and as for offroad you can hold it to the floor allday in the mud and shell never blow up. I probably shouldnt say never but it can take a beaten i know a lot of v8s wouldnt

the tail pipe 6 inches after the muffler on my truck rotted right out so i literally kicked it off. now around 30k theres a really deep but qiuet low purring sound. i like it. even at 100k it's a little bassier. but it's not to the point of tickin everyone off.
if you wanna make it sound good get a different muffler or a tip, but not an annoying one

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Apr-02 AT 09:05 PM (EST)]By far, the best thing I did for the sound of my truck was install the header. Comparing what it sounded like with a stock engine and a cherry bomb to what it sounds like now, well, you wouldn't think it was the same engine.
For comparison, here it is with the stock engine/single cherry bomb: [link:www.stfx.ca/people/edmacdon/fordpage/wavs/stock.mp3|http://www.stfx.ca/people/edmacdon/fordpage/wavs/cammed.mp3]

I have a few more with a few different exhaust systems, but, the server they and my site are on is down ATM
Here's the only one I can get at of it with a dual Cherry Bomb setup: [link:www.stfx.ca/people/edmacdon/fordpage/burn.wav|www.stfx.ca/people/edmacdon/fordpage/burn.wav]

wow thats great 82f100 how you got those sound links. The cammed open is about the same as my 150 sounds heck its almost that loud with pipes and glasspacks. I think its so loud because since its lifted and all i have perfectly straight pipes from the collectors right out to under the back bumper with the glasspacksending right after the cab. No bends in the pipes plus glasspacks = very loud. Actually its to loud and annoying to drive everyday. But now i only run it once in a while so im like a kid with a new toy when i start er up.

I recorded the 'ol beast with my video camera, and, using a RCA to headphone jack cable, plugged it into my computer, played back the video and recorded the sound with sound recorder...
The cammed open sounds are recorded from about 50 feet away from the truck, and, in the stock w/open header, I'm a good 1/8 mile away when I walk on it... Needless to say, the truck was LOUD.

My whole exaust system was shot, so I did a 2 1/2 inch pipe off the manifold to a really good glass pack, the weld on kind, not the crappy clamp on bottle, and then the exaust straight out the back. This gave it a really nioce loud deep tone, i was kinda wondering what the hell that dude was talking about the six being whiney??? whats up with that, my six is deeper than a chevelle with dynomax's on it. And in regards to the 4.9 being whiney, how the hell would that work it is by no means a small whiney engine,Profanity Removed

You can use a 'Y' pipe which will split your single exhaust to dual pipe then get a flowmaster with 2 in and 2 out. Flowmaster makes a single muffler that will handle this (2 pipes in & 2 pipes out) for around $100. It sounds great at idle but the 300 L6 will allways sound like a UPS truck off idle. If you really want a V8 sound, get a V8. Regards

Mike, I was thinking of suggesting it to the original poster here. If you are set on replacing your exhaust anyway, why not experiment with the stock exhaust first--just for the fun of it. I got the idea from someone who did just that. Anyway, I surely did not notice any power loss/gain, nor any fuel economy problems. I sure like the sound. It is not very loud, but I can always hear it and that is what I like, and it will bark a little when I stomp on it. Hey, if it weren't for my wife, I think I'd enlarge those holes .
Now this is not what I would call a performance car sound, but a truck sound.

I think my truck sounds pretty good, it's all stock but I replaced the muffler with a glasspack and put a 90* angle right after it, then i put just enough of an extension to get it to go come out past the bed, in-front of the tire. I think it's a cool custom job, and it sounds better than the bent pipe over the axle and behind the tire.
