It doesn't appear to be possible to fit the tensioner on backwards, or else the arm would point the opposite direction.
My observation is that the pulley shown in the pictures is bolted to the tensioner arm backwards, or upside down would be a better description.
The tensioner pulley bolt head also has an odd wear pattern. Any idea how that happened?
Was the belt you took off it the one that got munched or did this engine run for 2+ weeks with an oil pan stuffed with shredded belt?

I took off a new belt. The pulley bolt if I was a betting man, was probably the one that was In the original pulley that failed and then reused. And there is no doubt it drove around with a oil pan of shredded belt. The owner said he drove it for about 2 weeks after he changed the belt. I asked him if he put the tensioner on, he says no just a belt.......... Big hole in the timing cover is kinda hard to miss
So what caused the motor to lock up? Was it lack of oil pressure? Wouldn't that throw an idiot light and/or a CEL?
Well you would think. No way to tell, when I got the truck towed away from his house the battery had been dead for a while. It quit running due to a lack of oil pressure. But you would think it would throw a CEL. Maybe a EVAP code for the giant hole in the timing cover and OP.
so do we thing that in 2 weeks from the time of sale when it was running to the time of failure to when its not.....the failure occurred? wonder what the circumstances of the failure was.
the oil looks pretty bad for two week old oil.....every used vehicle I ever bought gets all fluids changed immediately.
There's no way that damage could occur in a two week period without the driver knowing it. Plus the OP said there was a new belt on it when he disassembled it. So there's more to this story than is posted here.
But can't blame the OP for just saying "whatever", doing the job, getting his money. Just be aware your customer may not always be telling you everything, lol.
I have tried to get as much info as possible just out of sheer curiosity, because I have never seen a engine belt end up inside the engine before. I'm told he bought it in November, drove it 2 weeks and that's it. The rest of the time it's been sitting while he pays the note. I agree though, there is allot more to the story thaN what I'm told.
It is difficult to logically approach rampant stupidity. Sometimes you just have to throw up your hands and say, "Because someone was an idiot " when asked why.
