4r100 transmssion problems

Hi. I have a 1999 ford f250 5.4 2 wheel drive i believe its a 4r100 transmission. auto. I have reverse but no forward gears. Ive heard this is a common problem , and on my reverse it has to hit 3000 rpm before it even tries to move and D 1 2 i have nothing only thing i hear is the engine sound changes gets deeper. Do i need a whole new transmission or is this fixable. Any help is greatly appreciated.

The trans is fixable. Take it out and get it rebuilt.

Do you have any idea on the cost or would it varies to the shop

I've seen rebuilds anywhere from $1300 to over $8000. It should fall somewhere between those two.

I would say the meat of the curve is between $2.5k and $4k for a stock rebuild, depending on what route is taken and what exactly needs to be replaced. Ford sells an HD 4R100 which is rumored to be a strong transmission and you have a variety of shops whose experience and quality of product will vary somewhere between 0 and 10. If you decide to keep it and get it fixed, it's worth doing your homework before you spend anything.
