i would like a higher end output on my 78 ford f100 custom and i am puting a 2300 holley 2 bbl 390 cfm street avenger with a 4 barrel offie intake on it. i know never to use a 2 bbl on a 1 bbl intake because of the restriction in the intake. does anyone know any problems with what i am doing and will i need to set the timing again even though the cfm never exceeds the max of that engine? so basicly will i have to do anything else?
This may be better placed on the 300 forum? My first response is to plan to recheck everything since you are making a major change to the intake flow and fuel feed.
Any carburetor that will bolt up will probably run, but there's more to it than that, you'll have to set it up and adjust it, making sure the right parts are installed for your particular truck and operating altitude. The manuals for just about any carburetor are available for download online. Read them and study them, there really is no way around this. Someone said a carburetor is just a "calibrated fuel leak" or somesuch. That's about right, it will waste gallons of fuel every tank and won't run much different than when setup right. A tach and a mechanic's vacuum gauge is a great help in engine tuning and diagnostics.
Multiple folks suggest adding EFI exhaust manifolds to replace the standard log exhaust, and some advocate installing Chevy 250 rockers. Those are both less expensive options than swapping the intake and carb. I am not the authority on either.
