300 I6 for 78' F250 4x - Carburator

My 300 has the stock 2bbl carb. Is there anything I should know before dropping a new 4 bbl on it? The old one need rebuilt.

I don't believe any 300 came from the factory with a stock 2bbl. They all had 1bbl carbs. Does it have an aftermarket intake on it or does it have an adaptor on it? Sounds like you have an offenhauser or clifford intake, if you already have a 2bbl and plan on swapping to a 4bbl. Also if you still have the stock log exhaust manifold a 4bbl won't help much if it can't breath out. Some more info would be great so we can help you. Like which carb do you want to put on it, do you have to pass emissions?

Apologies

Yes, it's the stock 1bbl not sure what I was thinking. Intake is also stock. Seeing if anyone has up graded to a 2bbl, along with upgrading the intake. If so what they would suggest, or if it's even worth it. The carb is in rough shape so it may be better to just replace w/ stock sizes.

Thanks

If you want to go with a 2bbl you could get the adaptor to use it on your stock intake which would be cheaper than an intake swap. Or you could put on a clifford or offenhauser intake and run a 2bbl like the motorcraft 2150 which i've heard is a good 2bbl carb. Im currently running the offenhauser dual port intake with a holley 390 4bbl. If you go with a different intake and you want to use a 2bbl get either the clifford of offenhauser c series intake and an adaptor. Check my gallery under 300 rebuild for pictures of the intake and carb.

I have a 77 Ford F-150, and I have been contemplating a intake/carburetor exchange like the one you describe here. I was wondering, exactly what parts did you have to get, where did you get them, and what kind of perfomance enhancement are we talking about? Also, I have a set of Hedman Headers installed, will the Offenhauser manifold work still? Why did you choose the holley 390 instead of the edelbrock performer?
Ok that's enough questions

Thanks Sam

1982fordf100 would be better suited to answer your questions. Great rebuild pics by the way. Thanks 1982!

The parts you will need are offenhauser intake, holley carb, one inch spacer, orginal throttle bracket, and fab new throttle bracket.

Those pictures show everything you will need, other than that its a bolt on swap. I got the intake and carb from summit racing. Ebay is a good choice for the intake if you can find one cheaper than a new one. The peformance is by far better than the 1bbl, when the secondaries open it pulls much harder. Not sure about the headers, im running EFI exhaust manifolds. They should fit just fine, many others use them with the offenhauser intake. I had to clearance my #4 exhaust runner on the intake a bit. Only reason I went with the holley 390 is because many others on here have used it and it seems like a good choice, its the first 4bbl carb i've ever had. Hope this helps.

For what it is worth, here's my take. I bought my truck with an offy C series and a holley 390 (as well as some other stuff). I have never been able to get the holley to run right, although there was no shortage of power. I recently switched to a motorcraft 2150, and am very happy. It isn't finicky and gets better mileage than the holley. It does seem to have slightly less power. Not much less at all, but the driveability tradeoff is worth it. Of course, if you are going from stock, you wouldn't know the difference. To really help your engine, throw on some efi manifolds or headers.
