Like the title says, what Cetane booster are you guys running? I recently heard that Ford recommends a minimum Cetane rating of 45, and all the different spots I frequent for diesel, all say 40. I don't know if I've been misinformed or if this holds true. I have never used it before with my 2011 F250 with 135k on the clock, or the 2017 F250 which I have a little over 7500 miles. Is it really needed, or is it a gimmick? I am never in a cold climate if that even matters.
I am new to diesels and there are some good articles on Cetane out there but this is what I have found and take it for what it is. My dealer who I am good friends with recommended that I use the Motorcraft cetane booster every other tank.
The result has been that I have been using only Shell diesel and had less regens with Shell diesel than Mobile diesel and now that I use 4 ounces of Motorcraft Cetane booster every other tank it seams like I have even fewer regens. Could just be me, its not a scientific study but it seams like fewer regens with the cetane.
My truck regens every 200-230 miles which as all of us know kills the mediocre fuel economy we already get. Mine isn't as bad as others I've seen on here, sitting at 16.4 mpg overall with the 7500 miles I have on it. Towing 13k lbs about 1k miles of that. I don't think I have a complete understanding of the reason behind the frequency of the regens, which sensor monitors the soot buildup due to unburned diesel, and does the cetane booster really help it burn that much cleaner? Should I aim for a cetane level of 50, or higher?
I use PM22a in each tank and am averaging much better mileage with my F450 than others (15 overall, 16 or so when not towing). I rarely notice regens, I'd say around 1 per 500 miles or so. I'm not sure that the PM22a is a major factor - driving gently produces much less soot and better mileage as well.
Volkswagen diesels run best at 50 cetane, I've been running Amsoil Cetane Boost every tank the last 18 years and 400,000 miles in my commuter, and run it in my 4 other VW diesels, and Liberty CRD.
