So my power steering pump has been leaking and I decided it was time to change it. Is there a trick to getting the pump out of the van? I have all the bolts out and the pump is loose, but it is wedged in there and doesn't want to come out.
I would love to hear from those of you who have tackled this job. Thanks
I replaced my pump once. I kept the old reservior, but just replaced the pump. Had to swap the pulley, but I couldn't get it done with my tools, so I took it to a shop that did it for something like $20. I guess with ratchet tools that sort of stuff is easier.
As for getting it out, I somehow got it out without pulling the AC pump. IIRC, I loosened my cruise control apparatus and hung it up by the hood. IDK. I can't remember exactly how I weaseled it out, but I know my friend was there and he gave up trying to pull it out. He said it was impossible, but somehow I managed to do it. Maybe I loosened up the AC pump tensioning bolt, so that I had more rotational movement to extract the PS pump... Or maybe I loosened up the fan shroud so that I could gain a few more mm's against the radiator.
Maybe it was from underneath.... Can't remember. Now that I think about it, I think we did end up unmounting the AC Pump.... It's slowly coming back to me. I distinctly remember wiring up a hanger so that we could have the AC pump up as high as possible and out of the way. Yep. That's it. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
Thanks. I ended up putting this off for another day. I had to get the van back on the road since it is my DD. I need to get my other vehicle going so it's not such a hassle if I take the van off the road for a few weeks to do some work. I enjoy wrenching, but when it is wrenching against a clock it sucks all the fun out of it.
