Had an interesting climb up Mt washington in NH..On the way up I had the ac on and the engine started to get warmer about 3/4 up on the guage. I shut the ac off and the temp went down...We couldn't most fast enough going up I guess..Had both f&r systems on...We stopped half way up and when we went to continue she wouldn't fire correctly because of a vapor lock..The pump couldn't grab any fuel you could audibly here it. It was louder and easily heard inside the van...It would run but not by much..I cycled the key to try to get it to pump up but that didn't work..I started it and let it run and 30 sec later she came to life and was great for the rest of the trip. I have noticed all 3 of my vans have exhibited this kind of behavior...Maybe a new pump needed...I also have noticed in the past with this van if you are in traffic in the heat and go to take off she doesn't do well..
That is exactly the type of behavior I get when the fuel pump starts to fail. Also as the pump fails, you get a lean mix, which doesn't help with the heat at all. Your radiator might be starting to become marginal too, which isn't going to help anything.
If you replace the pump, just be advised that I have had problems with EVERY aftermarket pump I have used in an Aerostar. I have yet to have a problem with a new Motorcraft pump. I say it is worth the extra cost to have something that won't let you down. RockAuto Auto Parts should have the Motorcraft part. It would be great if you could get just the Motorcraft pump instead of the complete assy.
