So my dad purchased a '96 Ranger XLT SuperCab 2WD 3.0 Auto for scrap value with a blown motor. The exterior and interior on this truck is near perfect.
I've done some research but haven't figured gotten any definitive answers.
My questions are this.
1). Will any '96+ 3.0 work? (Can I swap in say a 2002 and use the harness and ECM from the '02?)
2). Any year better than another in terms of reliability, is a '96 better than a '02?
3). I know in 2001 they went to chip keys on the Ranger, will this cause an issue if we swap in a newer engine in a older truck?
4). I know that in '98 they changed the body on the rangers, will this cause any other issues?
5). Can a Flexfuel 3.0 be swapped in place of a non-Flexfuel and Vice versa?
Anything else I should know before attempting a 3.0 Vulcan to 3.0 Vulcan swap?
Thank you in advance for any help.
We can get a good used engine from the local Junkyard for around $300, which is probably cheaper than rebuilding the current one. Not really interested in swapping in a 4.0 or 5.0, want to stay with the 3.0.
If you want an easy swap you want to use a motor that is 100% compatible with your truck and even then you should not use any wiring that comes with the donor motor.
If you want an easy swap you want to use a motor that is 100% compatible with your truck and even then you should not use any wiring that comes with the donor motor.
Why wouldn't I use any of the donor wiring?
Won't I have to swap the computer so the VIN matches in order for the truck to run?
If you only have a bad motor then your wiring is fine,,,why take a chance on donor having bad wiring ??? Your computer is tuned to your truck body, trans, and any anti thief system if you have one,,,so use your computer ( but get donor computer just in case ) ,,,if donor is same 3.0 your computer will work just fine,,,I THINK,,,your truck being a 96 you should not have a anti thief system,,,,simply put you do not want a computer for a automatic trying to run your stick and vice versa
Because it's simply not going to be compatible with the wiring in your truck. You might get away with using the engine harness on another motor from the same year but outside that the connectors may be pinned different or the connectors will be totally different and not even plug in.
