I have a 1984 Ranger 4x4 with manual transmission and the 2.8L V6 motor. The 2.8L is about dead, so I am looking for a feasible swap to keep using this good little 4x4. I have located a 1994 Explorer with the 4.0L V6, and was wondering how difficult it would be to swap in the 4.0L? I realize I would also have to swap the fuel tank and lines. Would swapping in the EFI wiring harness be too much of a nightmare? I like the overall idea, but am not willing to get into a project that isn't fairly simple.
That sounds potentially like a good swap and there are some very good tech articles over at the Ranger Station forum (at least 5) that might move you in the right direction:
I understand going from your Cologne 2.8's slightly newer 2.9 version to a '94 or older 4.0 is a simple "plug & play" swap, I would guess your 2.8 is very close as well. One thing is pre-'89 dash wiring will be different so that may be more involved for your '84. Again, TRS has a lot of good information. Let us know how it goes,
