Not being able to put in background pictures, no GPS coordinates or elevations when using navigation. These are things my 2011 had. Going backward with features. And no gallons used any more.
I was bored yesterday afternoon and installed the not yet released v2.2. I have not spent anytime with it yet so I can not comment if any changes were noteworthy. I think there is a thread on this forum somewhere with a bit more info. My truck took approximately 15 minutes to update. A cut and paste below from another forum.
Edit: I forgot trucks recently built already have this version. Earlier builds have v2.0. Not anything new to see here I guess.
This software release is the latest update in our continued efforts to improve system performance, device connectivity, and the overall SYNC experience.
This software contains the following enhancements:
are required to perform a software upgrade and purchase a hardware upgrade through your dealer.
The installation of this update will take up to 60 minutes to complete. DO NOT remove your USB drive or turn off your vehicle. You must wait until Installation Complete is displayed on the center screen before removing your drive or turning your vehicle off. Be sure your vehicle engine is running (not in accessory mode) throughout the entire installation process. Although your vehicle must be in park when you initiate the installation process, once the download process has begun, you may drive your vehicle.
Those links don't work. Says the "blob" doesn't exist. I've installed 2.2 on mine and can confirm it doesn't add much other than the traffic updates that weren't working on 2.0. I think it also fixed an issue for some apple users...but other than that no major changes that add capabilities that were in the 2012-2016 Mytouch system. Yes, Sync 3 on our trucks is a big step backwards.
Sync 3 is awesome, but you need to be using Android Auto (Maybe Carplay? Never been a iphone guy).
Google Maps is miles ahead of any onboard NAV will be. Plus all the other apps you can use on that glorious 8" screen. I'll never buy another car manufacturer NAV again. They always blow. Map updates are years behind, and the features are terrible in comparison.
I really HATE apple maps...and I DONT like not having a choice to even disable the apple maps as the default for car play.
even the (non current v2.2) ford nav maps are better but I would prefer an option to use Waze (or even google maps, which gets real-time data from Waze).
As a result - I am not using car plan nor am I connecting my phone to the in dash system.
I have also seen erratic re-boots of Spotify when connected to the factory usb/In dash system.
I've rooted my phone and use a framework that lets me use Waze, it's been rock solid so far. I can even see my PIDs like EGT and other the screen through some OBD2 apps.
But the stock Google maps is awesome too. Android seems to work a lot better than iOS.
I find the Sync 3 system and Apple Car Play to be absolutely wonderful. I came from a 2005 F150 with no types of displays or USB plugins, so for me, the new Sync 3 and Carplay are not steps back like people have mentioned. I find it just smooth and incredible how I can plug my phone in when I get in the truck, as I'm backing down the driveway, and my apple music justs starts playing. I have endless options of songs to play in Apple music and just push my VR button on the steering wheel and tell siri what song to play next, or to add the song I'm playing to my library. All in all, it's a dynamic and amazing system on these new trucks.
The only thing I wish they did different is show me outside temp when in carplay.
Here's a good real world test between Android Auto and Carplay. I've had the same exact experience in my F250 between my wife's iPhone 7 and my Pixel XL.
I'm obviously in the minority on this thread at least. I actually like it coming from a Sync 2 system in my '14 F150. It's been pretty rock solid GPS-wise. I like the fact that it displays the speed limit on the street I'm on. I use it consistently for work and it has yet to fail me.
I'm not a fan of Apple Car Play or whatever. The interface bugs me, so I haven't enabled it and I don't like the Apple maps. The only other thing I don't like is it adjusts the ringer volume on my phone to maximum every time it connects, but from what I've read, this is an Apple thing, not a Sync thing

Waze is coming to Android Auto. I signed up to be included in the beta but have not heard back/was not chosen.
