I bought a 1996 7.3 for a good deal but it seems to shift pretty hard. The guy claimed that it was built and the reason for it shifting like that was because "it's built it's supposed to shift hard and it really locks into gear" but I knew he was bsing and planned to rebuild or something anyway. I found monster transmissions and I can get a trans for $1,400 with a 3 year warranty and they claim it can handle 340hp and 600tq. Have any of you guys run monster transmission? It seems kind of too good to be true. But still I can get it painted for an additional $75

Like Oldbird suggested, check for a chip or any type of tuning installed. I know my BTS trans will shift hard in heavy tow mode with the PHP tunes from 2 to 3. I do like that though, and the shifts feel solid. The first time it happened I thought I had been rear ended. The PO of your truck may have done some mods down below, so that would be me second check.
$1400 is a very low price for anything quality. The line from the description "The Mega Monster is recommended for any type of heavy towing use around 5,500lbs!", would scare me away. That description is not really worthy of a heavy duty transmission.

I have heard of people using monster transmissions a few times, but only in gas applications. I too have been on their website and have looked at their pricing, it seems ridiculously low compared to other performance built transmissions. Why don't you go ahead and give it a shot and report back? haha
A guy near me rebuilds E40Ds for around $1300-1700 ish.
Thsts upgraded clutches, converter, pump mod, shift kit, and some other fancy stuff.
He rebuilt mine 50k miles ago and it's been going strong and towing 10k almost bi-weekly with a bunch of 5-7k tows in between. He charged me $1350 to rebuild it.
I know the saying "cheap work isn't good and good work isn't cheap" but sometimes you really don't need to spend a fortune to get something good.
That saying is true above. I burned up two auto's towing heavy and finally got a John Woods Trans. I'm on my 5th year with it and no problems yet.
From what I read you tow crazy heavy all the time. A JW transmission is probably perfect for your application.
Im not knocking JW or anything like that but not everyone needs to spend that much on a transmission when all they need it for is to putt around town and tow a light ish trailer every so often.
That monster transmission comes with a 3 year warranty. It's worth a shot in my book if the truck isn't something you're depending on for a primary source of income.

Your absolutely right, not everyone needs a JW. I would have never bought one if I didn't tow a heavy 5er.

And not everyone who gets a John Woods has good luck cough cough...
Manual trans all the way. I'll never go back. As far as the monster, if you don't think you have anything to lose, go for it. Let us all know how it works out.
