Problem, tranny judders when coming to a stop moving at around 3-4mph. Engine drops to around 500rpm and maybe one second later returns to normal as the tranny seems to disengage. No judder or shifting problem when accelerating. Any idea what's up?
Get your ELM scan tool running FORScan or the like diagnostic software on the viewing device of your choice & have it search the tranny controller for pending or set trouble code clues & post All code Numbers, as they can help focus your trouble shoot.
All that said, did this problem come about suddenly after some event, or slowly over time?
Is the tranny fluid level right, are you using a fluid that says it's licensed to meet the Mercon-5 specification & how many miles on the tranny filter & fluid & how does the tranny fluid look & feel? EDIT: Does it pass the blotter spot test as performed & interpreted in this threads Two links https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/9...-analysis.html ?

^^^^ This. This because, the problem description suggest that the torque converter is not unlocking when it should, namely this comment:
"when coming to a stop moving at around 3-4mph. Engine drops to around 500rpm and maybe one second later returns to normal as the tranny seems to disengage".
Correct operation when driving would be the torque converter unlocking anytime the throttle is returned to idle (lift your foot off the gas). Knowing this, there are a few other things you could try, in the name diagnostics:
a) disable OD and see if the problem stops.
b) The TC will not lock until the engine temp reaches 140*F (160* ?). So knowing this, see if the problem does/does not occur on a cold engine.
I had the pan dropped and drained (not the whole tranny) and after I got back to Mi. I swapped with the wife for my old Mazda beater, problem solved It is running better now that it has been pushed and run through morning stop /go's. Next time I run it in town I'll try disabling the od
