Hello I am new to the site and a ford truck lover and have owned many in the past ranging from 64 thru 2014. My current truck is a 2014 F150 STX sport crew cab 4x4 with the 5.0. The mileage is around 19,000.
Anyhow I recently picked up a 1974 F100 for my 16 year old son's first vehicle and it has the 460 auto with 90250 original miles. We have been doing things to it like cutting the y pipe and then I welded duals on it exiting the rear and used thrush welded mufflers for now due to the price of them. We will eventually be adding headers, intake and carb.
I have been reading that changing the timing chain from a 68-71 429-460 will help add some power to it because ford retarded the 460 after 71 due to emissions. Is this true? If so do I have to pull the distributer or just turn it to find correct time after chain has been changed?

Yes
Used to be able to buy a timing set for a later than 1971 460 car/truck, and the sets had a crank sprocket that had 3 different keyway slots in it, and could set the post-1971 car/truck to "straight up" timing.
If so do I have to pull the distributer or just turn it to find correct time after chain has been changed?
That depends on whether you can turn the distributor enough without the vac advance unit hitting something before getting the timing set. May, or may not have to pull it.
So do I just buy a chain for 68-71? Put the #1 piston to tdc on the compression stroke and line up the dots on the gears just like a guy would do with any other motor they changed the chain on?
Ford put the 460 in the F250 (Camper Special) but as far I can tell, Ford never put one in a F100.
So it appears that someone swapped engines in your son's truck - and if that's the case they may have already swapped timing chain sets.
Does this engine look like a swap (are there any performance goodies on it)?
No offense so please don't take this the wrong way but you need to do a little more research. The 460 was offered in the 74F100. I have an original sales 74 brochure that has it listed. Also it is listed in the chiltons manual. I purchased the truck from a 82 year old man the bought it from the original owner that he knew his whole life and was older than him. The truck is factory.

No offense taken - we are all here to help when we can - and learn from others.
Not sure if they make a double roller for the older build dates. Order a timing set for an '88-'97 which is straight up and a double roller. It will fit

Ok so the 88-97 will fit like a normal set does with dots pointed to each other and that will put the motor back to where it was before ford retarded the 460? What does straight up mean?
Yes and yes. Straight up means zero timing as in neither advanced, nor retarded. Set your crank at TDC on #1 cylinder compression stroke and the dots on the timing gears should line up.
