After you replace it it wouldn't hurt to get your radiator cap checked to make sure it is releasing as intended around 14 psi. High system pressure could have contributed to the failure.
Junk piles up against the backside then electrolysis or something like it sets in and eats it alive. I've replaced 3 like that so far, 2 on the SuperCab and one on the Crown Vic. Don't forget to reach in there and scoop the junk out so you don't lose another plug before it's time.
