Timing pointer

So I am going to try to make this as short as I can lol. I swapped engines this winter from one 302 to another. One was original truck motor 71 f100 and the other a donor, thinking it was a car or can. Before the swap I noticed that the water pump outlet on the original was to the drivers side and the other donor motor pump outlet was to the passenger. My dilemma is that with the when I put the a new water pump on the donor motor it needed to match the radiator in the truck and now the pump hides the pointer and Harmonic balancer marks so dialing in timing is impossible. I would like to relocated a pointer on the passenger side like the original. Any words of wisdom????

I had a stock 74 van with a 302 and I had to lay on the ground and use the timing light from under.

As long as the donor engine and it's timing chain cover are for a V belt and not serpentine, the W/P bolt pattern is the same right side or left side W/P. So go to a local Parts store and buy a NEW pump that's inlet is to the driver's side.

Jeff, I think if I read it right the OP has the correct pump on it now. It's just that the timing marks are also on the drivers side, and now hidden by the correct pump. If that's right, then I think you would have to change the harmonic balancer and pointer to be on the passenger side. making sure that it all lines up to the 0 when #1 piston is TDC on compression stroke. It would be a matter of finding the right parts. Just a thought, sorry if I read it wrong. What do you think?

You are exactly right. Having a problem finding the right parts. May have to fab something up.

302: 1968/69 Passenger Cars, 1969/74 Econolines; 1969/77 Bronco's used a different water pump (D3UZ-8501-A replaced C9TZ-8501-A) and timing pointer than...

1969/76 F100; 1975/76 F150; 1970/72 Passenger Cars that used D0OZ-8501-C

As JEFFFAFA said, get the correct water pump and the problem is solved.

You already have the correct parts on the original motor. Swap the timing pointer and vibration damper from the original motor to the replacement motor. Then radiator, lower hose, W/P, timing pointer, and timing marks will all work together as they did in the past.

aine, you don't have to time off #1 cylinder. You can mark off 90, 180 or 270 degrees and move the pointer on the block to where you can see it. Measure the circumference of the damper and go 1/4 of that for the TDC mark. Find the cylinder that fires there and use that, or time off the coil wire.

I remember buying a timing tape to stick on the damper to mark degrees. I am sure that they are still available somewhere.
