Im putting a new radiator and water pump into my 93' 4.0 with 140,000 miles on it. I was wondering if it would be a good idea to put a new timing chain on while I have the front end off.
A timing chain does not wear like a timing belt. At 140k it should still be ok. Even tho you have the water pump off, you still have a way to go to get to the chain. jd
Yes, timing chains and timing belts DO wear DIFFERENTLY.
A chain will be very stretched out at that mileage, and should definetely
be changed, usually with new sprockets as well. This has always been the main drawback of chains, in that they stretch and change timing. Plus, they are noisier than belts. Their advantage is that the do not break.
A belt doesn't stretch and maintains it's timing very well, but the rubber eventually breaks down and it either breaks or looses a "tooth".
Change your chain and you will have much happier timing and a very smooth engine.
