Coolant Loss
OK Folks,
As noted in my handle I am a newbie to the diesel world. '02 7.3, losing coolant. Occasional whiff of antifreeze, not in oil. Any ideas/suggestions, use my truck to tow a food trailer thats only about 4500lbs, some highway, most city driving. 173K clicks, bout Jan 2016 with 130K, first time this has happened, it's got me totally befuddles,

No, no, no get your truck and drive as fast as you can from that so called "mechanic" stick around with us and ask questions and you can become a DIYourselfer in a short time. Our trucks don't even have an EGR, and head gasket almost never fail.

What he said. Pulling a head and EGR? Red flags. Perhaps he's a diesel noob too.
But let's get some info flowing. What color is the coolant, green, gold or red? Any contaminants in the coolant, specks of crud or fuel? How low does it go? Many trucks happily settle an inch or so below the fill line.
The classic leak will begin slowly from the weep hole on the water pump behind the pulley. Look underneath when stopped after a good run.

Hey Folks, many thanks, losing thru heater coil, $275 job, got lucky, thanks again for jumping in with advice so quickly.

at least oyu found the bad heater core.
my 02 has been leaking 1 gallon per year for the 10 years i have had it. cant find the leak because it is so small.
so i just live with it and add 1 gallon every march.
