hey guys i have a 2005 f250 superduty with the 6.0. about a month ago i blew a head gasket and spent about 5 grand getting them fixed and stuff replaced like the waterpump, resevoir thermostat and also had the arp head studs put in. i am also new to the diesel trucks so i might be over reacting but i have ran the truck for about a month now with no problem. i notced that they filled it up above the max but today i just happend to pop the hood after sitting in traffic fr 2 hours and noticed it was just below the max line instead of just above it. should i be worried?
I would hope the shop also changed out the coolant res cap. These have been known to not hold the 15 lbs of pressure and leak, especially if sitting in traffic for several hours.
The next obvious question is did they change the oil cooler and egr at the same time?
Pull your egr valve and inspect for dry soot. If wet, more issues with egr failure, thus losing coolant.
Hopefully, a bad coolant bottle cap.
If it was just filled up, you don't have anything to worry about. After the first time or two you drive it, it will need to be topped off to max (cold) as air gets purged out of the system. Beyond that, it should not be changing.
If by "reservoir" you mean the upper coolant bottle, you'll typically see it referred to as the degas bottle on this forum... Because that's where air (gas) is removed from the coolant, I suppose. How is yours marked? There is an old style with two lines that ford added a sticker to, and the new one with one line and a sticker.
The old one is the brown discolored one... The nice clear one is the new one I got a few weeks ago.
It should be checked when cold as well.
Mine has been below the line once hot... it's weird as most of the time it's above. But every morning I check it cold and it's dead on the line. (I know.. I'm obsessive checking everyday.)
It's a habbit. Lol
And as someone stated about the cap.. The oem and caps that come with the new degas bottle are garbage. Get a stant cap for 5$ they screw on. Not the click type.
I will add that you shouldn't fill the bottle any higher than the min. line and a new Ford t-stat is the way to go. They have redesigned them. My 05 could vary the amount in the bottle by as much as 1/2 inch and then be back where I had it the next day. The 6.0 cooling system can play with your mind. Don't let it. Just check when fueling and enjoy the truck.
Thanks for the replies I check it every day and it is good sometimes it is a lite below the max but most of the time it is dead on just being over cautious I guess. As I said before I got the heads redone and the studs put in the previous owner put the egr in and I have also replaced the degas bottle. They replaced my waterpump and thermostat when they did the heads. Anything else I could do to get better performance out of the truck and make it last thinking about a cold air intake not really sure
