My 03 has developed a rough idle problem. Doesn't occur all the time but when it does, engine acts like it wants to die and shakes real bad. Dealership said there was a reflash out that would fix the problem as well as increase the MPG from my current numbers which are around 15.9 highway and 11.1 towing. Truck has about 1,200 miles on it. Engine is awesome other than the occasional idle problem. I've heard mileage should be better than what I'm getting but those numbers are still a lot better than my last truck with V10. It was a gas guzzling pig (around 10.8 highway and 7 towing). So, should I get the reflash done - some people on this forum have suggested waiting in earlier posts regarding reflashes. Thanks for any input.
If it is idleing rough like it wants to stop or missing you mite have a bad fuel injector, this is a very commom problem for the 6.0 L diesel, at the dealership I was at this afternoon they told me that they had sold 6 trucks with the 6.0 L diesel 4 of them have come back for one or more bad injectors. But it doesn't idle rough all the time - only during startup and again, it doesn't happen all the time. Once you hit the pedal, it goes away and usually doens't happen again until the truck is shut off and then restarted. Also, idle problem occurs more when engine is still warm/hot. I can't remember it happening when its started the first time in the morning.
I had it reprogrammed on Wednesday have noticed that the rough idle is still occuring. It only occurs when the engine is still warm. Doesn't ever seem to do it on a cold start. I know the dealer installed the program (mechanic said it updated 6 different things) but not sure about the ICP solenoid. What the heck is an ICP solenoid anyway? I'm about to call the dealer as soon as I post this message.
Thanks for any additional ideas ya'll may have.
P.S. - I've drive about 1,000 miles since the update and have noticed that MPG is steadiliy increasing each tank (actually calculatd per tank). Last fill up, I had gotten up to 17.2 MPG. Before the update, I was only getting around 15.5 MPG.
Along these same lines, I'm about to purchase a new 03 6.0... how can I tell which flash it has (since it seems there have been several), and should I have them bring it up to the latest flash now, or wait till I see how it does out of the box? Any opinions? Thanks.
Jim
The newest flash has this Ford part Number. 3C3A-12A650-BDM. when they put this into the computer, Ford will put a Official Ford Sticker on the fan scrod, stateing what is in the truck and the date they put it in.
This new program has gotten rid of the smoking at start-up, the hasitation at low rpm and passing, and I recieved a 1 mpg improvement in milage, still looking for the other 2 I lost.
I'm going to take it back in on Tuesday next week. The head diesel mechanic says the last program as Robaire was posted about has fixed all the rough idle problem trucks they've had so his quess is a faulty sensor or other recall that was missed since this truck was sent to the dealership under a dealer exchange from some dealership near Waco. Since the owner of the dealership is a good friend and client, I have no doubt they'll get it fixed or take care of me. I'll get a loaner truck free of charge if the head mechanic thinks it will take more than a day to get right. I'll post an update next week. Until then, I'll live with the occasional rough idle and keep rolling the miles on it.
OK - maybe I jumped the gun. Now the rough idle seems to be gone. Every once in a while I feel a little shutter but the engine quickly returns to normal. No more shaking of the truck or acting like it wants to die. The MPG continue to increase. Towed a 9,000lb Travel trailer this weekend and got 13.6mpg. What a difference from my previous V-10 (around 7mpg). Engine response is good so I'm going to drive it some more and see how it goes. Only thing I did notice is if it idles more than approx. 5 minutes, the engine will increase RPms from 600 to approx 900. Is this a normal occurance I should expect or does this need to be looked at. If you tap the brake or gas pedal, it will drop back down to a smooth 600 rpm.
Boy do I love the way this thing tows - smooth and quiet with plenty of power in reserve. Even my wife commented on how much more enjoyable the trip was.
