New fuel filter on idi diesel and no start.

I swapped out my fuel filter on my 1990 idi diesel today and the truck won't fire. I cranked it, cracked the injector lines,etc.. I even unhooked the fuel pump line on the side of the motor and I can't get it to pump fuel while the motor is cranking(even though it was new last fall).

Would my pump be bad, even though it was new last yr? Or something else?

either bad lift pump or the fuel level in the tank is low enough that it is sucking air.

Is there fuel in the filter?
did you get fuel out of the injectors when you cracked the lines?

Although Ive got a 5.0 V8 I was having a slightly similar problem today. Found one of the terminals on the plug for the EEC relay was cracked/broken. Not sure if your truck has anything like that or if the fault finding process is similar?

nothing is the same between diesels and gas engines. all you need to make a diesel run is 12 volts to the fuel shutoff and fuel

Ok, no worries. Kind of makes me wish I had a diesel.

I ended up finding out the new filter was junk and wouldn't let fuel pass through it. Replaced it and it started right up.
but the truck still surges in the morning some and acts like a loss of power towing.I was thinking maybe the injector pump starting to go south?

^^^^My wife got yelled at by one, in the parking lot of.... yeah... the local food co-op (hey, we may drive stink pots, but we eat organic...). She stopped to let a guy on foot cross the parking lot, marked crosswalk, and the dude yelled at her, something like "Go, go on, you're the one burning all that gas!" All that for yielding the crosswalk to him!

We park on the street now (parking lot is sized for those little crackerboxes anyway).

Oh... yeah, the OP... I'm thinking maybe there's still just some air to purge?
