Having an intermittent starting problem after sitting for a period of time or overnight. Engine will crank but not start, turn key off and back on wait 5 sec and engine starts and runs fine. Restarts all day long no problem. dealer found a code(unk number) for low fuel rail pressure. Was able to create the problem for the tech. So far we have replaced the fuel filter, the FPDC (fuel pump driver control) and the fuel pump. Also replaced two ground straps, possible poor connection.
Problem continues.
Any Ideas?
Do you have a fuel filter on the frame?
What about the FPR?
could it be an injector is staying open a little bit causing the pressure to drop overnight?
From the sounds of it, the pump is weak, you turn on, no start, off and on again, enough pressure is built to start.
You could try just turning key on wait 2 seconds, turn key off, then turn key back on and try starting.
I'd put a fuel pressure gauge on the rail, record what the pressure is with key on, then running, then shut off, leave it on overnight, look at it in the morning and see how much the gauge dropped.
The fuel is frame mounted and has been replaced. This model year doesn't use a Fuel Pump relay, it was replaced by the fuel Pump Control Module mounted on the frame above the rear axle.
I have thought about a stuck injector but know how to check for it.
Where/how would I mount a pressure gage to the fuel rail?
Even if the injector was stuck open, The fuelpump would quickly bring up fuel pressure when you crank it.
I'd check with fuel pressure too. There should be a schrader valve on top of the engine where you can put a pressure gauge on.
Check the oil for fuel contamination. Check to see if the level does not go up over time.
Install an obd2 reader. If you use an android phone it won't cost more than 30 bucks total for the dongle + torque pro.
Took awhile but the problem is solved. The Fuel Pump Relay in the Central Junction Box was intermittent. Bad news is that the relay is hard wired to the circuit board so I had to replace the entire fuse box under the steering wheel.
