I have an 86 that a rod let go in and have a chance to buy a 97 complete engine so I was wondering if I could strip the 97 down to bare short block and put all the 86 external stuff on it. Heads, timing cover, pan, and so on.
Thanks Ard, glad you mentioned cam cause I do have a little bigger cam. It's just a 480 lift cam, can it go into newer block and do you think valves would hit or should I be sure and do a valve clearance check.
The cam will fit in the block. I don't know enough to say with certainty that your valves will (or won't) clear.
And, I want to be the first to admit that I am no engine building guru.
I am observant, and cautious when mistakes are expensive..
I was just trying to point out that efi heads have a different valve angle, and therefore the head of the piston has a different relief.
You might try asking in the big block performance subforum.
