I was wanting to know if anyone knows if this will work? I have a 1991 F-350 crew cab 4x4. It has the EFI 460 that has seen better days! In my Garage I have a 1977 460. will the fuel injection bolt right up? I know that there will be other odds and ends that i will have to contend with like maybe having to use the V belt set up instead of the serpentine belt system. If you know or have done this please give some feed back! Thanks Chet
It wouldn't be a walk in the park, but it can be done. I've never done it but based on what I know I'd have to say that quite a few things would need changing. Are the heads the same on either engine?
The problem is that the 460 is run on Speed Density EFI, which is not very forgiving with modifications. The cam needs to be within tight specs so it keeps the vacuum right and the computer can correctly compensate for engine load. I would say that the cam needs to be swapped over, the intake system needs to be swapped over, and possibly the heads...
If the cam of the bad engine is roller and the cam on the good engine is not - you'll have to make that switch happen or change the cam to one with the right specs.
The EFI intake and the EFI heads have to stay as a set.
You can shove the EFI stuff, as a set, on the older block no problem.
My 500cid stroker is a 77 block, and it mates up just fine.
Use the EFI head gaskets, not the older block headgaskets and it will seal just fine.
*I've* done it. Well, am doing it. Engine's already been run on the test stand to 5000 RPM several times, no problems whatsoever.
Oh, BTW, I did use an EFI cam. I don't think there is a difference in the distributor gear between non-efi and efi, but I used an EFI cam like I said so I didn't experience any hassles in that department.
well i'm guessing thanks?!!! that not what I really wanted to hear ya know?LOL!!! but atleast I know now though! I guess I might just do what i did to my 83 Bronco and convert everything to carb motor! I really apprectiate the input here! thanks Chet

Ya, converting it to a carb would probably be easier...
I think the non-EFI/EFI distributor gear is simply a concern for whether or not it's a roller camshaft. The roller camshafts use a different material gear on the distributor - wrong gear and it'll be chewed up in no time.

As long as your municipality doesn't have emissions testing, or emissions testing in the near future, enjoy the carb.
