Last fall I was getting an oil temp sensor error code. When I first turned the truck on first thing in the morning, the oil gauge shot all the way to the right after the diagnostic and the display read 'high oil temp reduced power mode' (or something like that).
The dealer couldn't find a problem so replaced the sensor and its been good, til today. They suspected maybe the wiring may be the issue but couldn't find the problem and replacing the sensor did seem to take care of it.
It's back. When this code fires (P0197, Engine Oil Temp Sensor Low), it also triggers P2560, Engine Coolant Level Low. Because of the previous issue, I cleared the codes and continued on my journey hauling my fiver to Texas.
All seemed well on the 600 mile journey. However, after I got here, I turned the key on after unhooking just out of curiosity and the oil temp gauge crept up while the coolant one went right into position. After I cleared the codes this morning, the coolant gauge moved normally, while the oil gauge crept up and got into position after about a minute and stayed there the entire journey. It was 48 degrees last night so no way the oil was at its working temp less than five minutes into the drive.
Looking for advice on this one. Ford dealer a couple miles from here so will contact them in the morning but am pretty confident I can just reset the code (if it fires again) and finish the final 460 miles of our journey.
The first thing I'd do is check the connector plugs. Hit them with some contact cleaner and try some dielectric grease on the male ends. I had similar problems on my 6.0 and this took care of it.
Made it the 1770 miles to Texas and enjoyed a great week in Kerrville with a trip to Bandera and San Antonio. The dealer in Kerrville did replace the oil sensor, but on the morning of our final leg home the dash lit up again. Cleared the code and made it home, though it did buck a few times a few miles into the trip.
Ford is getting involved now. They are thinking it is the connector, stating it is all that is left at this point. Should be going in this week for a couple days.
That was exactly the problem, senix. My local dealer found a chaffed wire and repaired it. Been good since. Just FYI: Ford ESP doesn't cover chaffed wire repairs.

That's interesting. Since when when is wiring considered a consumable or a wear item? At least it should depend on what caused the chafing...

would you have a location where the wires are chaffed
