Help!
I don't know for sure and I am sure someone will come along to answer that question for you.
But as a guess yes the only thing I have seen posted is maybe the balance weight of the harmonic balancer & flywheel/flex plate changed between early & late motors but again don't know if that would be the case with you.
So what trany does the 82 have and what trany did the 86 use?

Swapped oil pans, the engine I got had the double sump. I needed the rear sump oil pan so I swapped the one off the old engine to the new. Double check the oil pump pickup, you may need to swap some of that also. You should be good with the dipstick if you move the dipstick with the pan it goes to.
Swap timing covers so you can run a mechanical fuel pump. Do this while you have the pan off and check the timing chain, it probably needs one. The later engine I had used a 1/2 dowel alignment pin for the cover, the older cover had something like a 3/8 dowel. So I drilled the old cover out to fit the larger dowel pins on the later engine.
When you are swapping covers, keep track of the timing pointer mounting. You need to keep the damper with the engine, and the flywheel flexplate also, to keep the balance. But sometimes they moved the timing pointer around, so make sure you can keep that relationship the same so the timing marks line up with the newer balancer. If you need a flywheel or flexplate for the newer engine, be careful about swapping from your older engine. Your engine is close to the date when they changed the balance of the 302 engines. To be safe, buy a flexplate if you need it for the 89, hopefully it will fit your trans.
You will need to swap distributors, and intake manifolds. Double check the intake gaskets, to make the whole thing cheaper I found it was better to buy a complete engine gasket set. The gasket set came with two sets of intake gaskets. I put the gaskets on the intake and then on the head to check coverage. One set worked, the other set would not so double check this.
Everything else will just bolt on. And then it will drop right in.
