Can you help me out??

Hey guys i just bought myself an 82 full size project bronco. its my first bronco and im really excited about it!! truck is auto and is complete but came with a locked up 302 v8 with its original 2 bbl carb frozen stuck. i pulled the motor out and took it all apart and plan to rebuild it.... but option 2 is installing a 302 engine out of a late 80s lincoln or crown vic fuel inj..i would want to make it carbureted of course which arises my main question!! would this be possible??? is the block the same to swap over all the 1982 equipment??will it work out without any probs i need to get this sucker goin!! any help will be greatly appreciated thanks guys!!

To the best of my knowledge you can swap the fuel systems, unless the EFI engine has the GT40 heads. I took the EFI system off a 1992 302 Mustang and swapped in onto a 1969 302 block and heads.

The later engine will work fine, I put a 86 fuel injected engine in my 80. When I got the newer fuel injected engine, I pulled all the injection stuff off the new engine, and pulled the oil pan and the whole front of the new engine apart.

I then put new timing gears and chain in it, put the fuel pump eccentric off the older engine on the upper cam gear, drilled out the alignment dowel holes to 1/2" on the timing cover off the old engine, and installed the old timing cover on the new engine.

I then installed the older style water pump on the new engine, and the fuel pump. I used the newer style intake gaskets and installed the carbed intake. Do not use the newer waterpump and fan with the v-belts setup.

I then installed the older dist. There is a big debate on about the gear on the dist, since the newer engine will have a roller camshaft. I went to my local Ford engine builder, and he said don't worry about the gear, and I didn't, and I ran it for 8 years with no problems. But some people say you should change the dist gear.

It all works out fine. Put your rear sump oil pan on from the older engine, and you are ready. Make sure the oil pump pickup tubes are the same, or just swap them out also.

ONE THING I JUST REMEMBERED THAT IS VERY IMPORTANT. You need to figure out your flywheel/flexplate. The early 302's were 28oz inbalance, your newer engine will be 50oz inbalance. I had to buy a newer flexplate to match the newer engine with the older tranny I had, since my newer engine did not come with a flexplate. If your newer engine comes with the flexplate, and it will bolt to your older tranny, make sure and use it. If you do not have a flexplate with the newer engine, make sure you get the right one. Problem is, your 82 engine is right around the date when they changed the balance. So you may or may not have the 50oz flexplate already. Research this and make sure you have the right one.
