So a while back I requested opinions on brake pads. Decided to go with the green EBC. No problems until this last weekend. Went to drive and the truck was shaking like crazy. Turned around and came back home. Fast forward to today. Have time to investigate. Take a drive and same thing. Drive a few miles and start smelling that wonderful hot smell. Get out to investigate and the front left side appears to be stuck, judging by the smoke rolling off it. Never have had this issue before. So now the question. What is the best way to tackle this? The slide pins are sliding freely. The right side turns fine. The left side wouldn't turn. I believe it to be a caliper issue but have never had to work on one before now. So feed me my brothers and sisters.
If it isn't the slide pins Its more than likely the caliper. I've heard of the brake hoses failing internally causing it but never experienced that personally. I had that happen on one of my rear calipers, so I replaced all 4 and the hoses. brakes never felt better.
At minimum I would replace the caliper in question.
Bad hoses often don't look bad from the outside. When you cut into a bad hose, there is hardly any hole left in the middle. Maybe it is the brake fluid over time that makes the hose swell up on the inside. The pressure from the master cylinder can force fluid through, but the returning caliper piston has very little ability to push that fluid back through a bad hose.

Thanks for all the info thus far. So if it is the caliper, is there a way to clean it or is it just a replace item? Also I remember reading a while back about upgrading the hoses to the braided ones, and someone sells a complete kit that if I remember correctly folks liked. I will need to search that.
Just to add, I have been searching through the threads trying to find what brake fluid everyone recommends. So haven't found an answer yet. Recommended brake fluid?
As said above replace those rubber lines! It's a 17 year old truck. I went through countless pads/rotors/calibers blah blah blah! I switched the rubber lines the last go round along with EBC green or yellow stuff and didn't have another problem
Ah! Thanks Sous! Those are the ones I saw before that I have been searching through the threads. A little off topic but I enjoy reading your posts and your trips with the 5th wheel so far. Thanks for serving! Look forward to more camping stories in the future.
Supposedly you need to call and order 2 additional rear lines from axle to hub, I have not done this yet myself.
Sous,
Your advice is spot on with Crown Performance, for whatever reason they don't have the 5 piece kit listed on their web site. I had to call them to get the rear caliper hoses.
To the OP if you want to test your existing hoses, I would think the easiest way to test them would be to open the bleeder. If the fluid squirts out under pressure and the caliper releases the hose is a good bet.
