I keep several of them around. Even the bolt down ones are good for parts, most of them free. It's a simple task to slap in the regulator and brushes. That being said, I have never had one fail, and all mine come from junk cars.
Yes it is odd it was working then not but believe me weirder things happened when I was in the repair business and try to explain to a customer how their car broke down while it was parked in your shop,lol.
yeah the one i grabbed had a nasty squeak but i was in a pinch and needed it fast. Couldn't hear the squeak over the 360 anyways. il get another one probably tomorrow, take my time and find a good non-remanufactured one.

The squeak is most likely one of the armature bearings. When I got my 130 amp 3G from a wrecking yard '94 Mustang, I took the alternator to the parts store to have it tested. Its output was good but it had an obvious bearing problem when they were spinning it on the tester (bad rear bearing).
I brought it home and broke the alternator apart, bead blasted the case, installed new armature bearings (front and rear), painted the case and put it back together. It's been running great for about 4 years now.
