Posted this over in the big bronco section, but got no input. Maybe someone here can help.
I am about to replace my stock 2G alternator with a 200A 3G ONE WIRE unit on my '89 Bronco. On the generator light indicator wire; (green/ red with a pin connector coming out of the old alt. plug) is there a way to bypass this so my charging light isn't always going to be on? Can I wire it right to the starter solenoid? Thanks.
Oh, I do want the light to come on if there's a problem. What I'm saying is the stock alt. has 2 molex plugs connecting to it. The new alt. is a one-wire hookup (positive lead only.) There is no provision for the charging lamp indicator wire in the new setup. I am trying to figure out where to connect the green/red wire after I cut it from the old loom (which I'll no longer need,) and still have it function. Thanks.
The light will not function with a one wire alternator. The one wire alternator is just that, one wire. Unless you have a special connection on the alt for the light, it will not work. Then it would not be one wire would it? Just tape the wire off, and get a voltmeter for the dash.
Make sure you upgrade the rest of your wiring, or you will see no advantage to the high output alt. By this I mean the wire from the alt to the starter relay/battery connection should be very heavy like a #8 or #6 wire. And whatever you need all this output for should be connected with heavy wires to that same spot, or a heavy aux fuse box should be connected to that same spot. If you tack on a heavy load somewhere else in the original harness, you won't see much advantage to the alt because the original wiring is too small for the alt to "see" the load and feed it.
