I'm blowing lots of stinky white smoke that smells like diesel at idle and way worse if I drive it, and it's getting a cylinder 1 cont code. I *think* it first happened after a couple WOT runs on the freeway.
We ran a contribution test and a buzz test.
On the buzz test, we could not hear cylinder 1.
On the contribution test, cylinder 1 was like -40 or -50, and the rest of the cylinders were all fluctuating between +1 to +10. We would kill each cylinder, and only number 1 didn't change. Killing 2-8 would cause a very noticeable rough idle.
So my line of thinking, the spool valve or whatever is stuck open and I'm replacing injector number 1, and I shouldn't need to worry about the rest of the injectors? anything else I should worry about or replace while i'm in there?
I'm going to pick up a blue spring today to try and prevent this again. I'm curious about the before/after new spring fuel pressure so I'll check that out.

Make sure you replace it with an OEM remanufactured injector. Get a fuel pressure gauge set up so you can monitor your fuel pressure while driving, during a wide open throttle run the fuel pressure needs to be greater than 45PSI or injector pintle damage may occur, if it will not stay above 45PSI at WOT you need to replace the fuel pump.
& a big x2 on OEM injectors. house brand parts store injectors just don't cut the cheese
also, wanted add that you can consider replacing stand pipes and dummy plugs since you'll have at least one valve cover off. being as you asked if there's anything else to worry about while you're in there...
for some reason I thought the stand pipes/dummy plugs issue were an 04.5+ thing, not 03. Am I wrong? I read so much on here, and sometimes I confuse things having an 03 and reading stuff that might only apply to 04.5+
and yes, I'm getting the injector from my local Ford dealership- $260 + $150 core charge. YEESH
I'm getting an Edge Insight next month for my b-day, and am planning to include the fuel pressure and egt add ons.

You are correct the pipes and plugs are an 04.5 and up problem.
edit: woops, i thought that was limited to hpop and sct fitting!
The only 6.0's that need worry about pipes and plugs are the ones with the ICP sensor located on the passenger side valve cover and the only ones that have to worry about the STC fitting are the 05 and up superdutys and some of the 05 excursions that didn't have the carry over 04.5 6.0.
haha, I'm glad to know my thoughts were correct, being married i'm usually never right :P. My build date is 02/03. the differences in 03-04.5, 04.5-05, and 05-07 and possibly more can be really confusing. thanks for confirming.
So what kind of numbers would a "normal" contribution test put out? pretty much the same as my 7 good injectors? From what I understand, we're looking for more just an even number across all injectors, correct?
well, I'll continue on with my plan and I appreciate all the help. I'm going to swap it out today. If others have any more input, definitely chime in! whether it helps me or someone else down the road.
one more quick thing (which you may very well know), when you do the FPR, put a zip tie on the fuel line so you don't loose the nut way down where its hard to get to
Couple more things. You can get oem injectors for a better price, but need to get them online. We got some from Autonation in White bear lake mn. Closer to $200.
There is also a relative compression test that can be run to let you know if that cylinder is sealing poorly compared to others.
