Oil leak around oil filter

I've posted before about a recently acquired 88 F250 7.5 that I'm fixing. It had a leaking intake manifold gasket. I changed that, and smogged it about two months ago. During the smog check I noticed it was dripping oil from the area of the oil filter. I drove the truck home and parked it. Sure enough, it left an oil spot under that location.

A few weeks ago, I drove the truck 200 feet, parked for an hour while shuffling other vehicles around, and then backed it 200 feet to almost but not exactly where it was before. It left a new oil spot in the new position. The truck hasn't been run since, and the oil dripping has mostly stopped.

I assumed that I didn't get the intake end seal just right, or that the dizzy O-ring was now leaking. A few days ago I went looking for the source of the oil leak. The top of the engine is nice and dry! The rearward side of the oil filter is oily though. The oil obviously runs down the filter and then drips onto the ground.

Did I not get the oil filter on tight enough? I tightened it hand tight as tight as I could. This has worked real well for me on other vehicles. I didn't notice this oil leak before I changed the intake gasket. (I had changed the oil about a week before that.) Could it be leaking from someplace else?

BTW, this truck has an engine oil cooler mounted in front of the radiator. It has oil lines running from the cooler to the oil filter adapter.

I had a similar problem. Tighten the filter again. If that doesn't help, run engine dye through it and that should tell you exactly where its coming from.

Its leaking under the adapter for your oil cooler lines .had the same problem on my motorhome
theres a 3/4 in bolt going thru it (i think) and a gasket under it.

As I said before, I had the same problem. I bought an oil cooler kit and had it all set up, but the sandwich adapter did not fit and I ended up getting a remote filter kit. I would just tighten everything up - make sure the hoses are properly clamped and the filter and adapters tight as well. When I had work on my truck, the mechanics didn't tighten up one of those hoses, and I lost all my oil on the highway, so I've been there. If that isn't the problem, then you would have to check gaskets and all that fun stuff.

the oring under the cooler adapter was probably cooked the same time as the intake, It's messy but not hard to change.

I'll try tightening the filter when I get around to working on the truck. BTW, the filter I installed is a genuine Ford FL-1A.
