Depends on your tire size but even a stock size 265/75/16 D rated or Load index 119 tire inflated to the door sticker recommended 55 psi is capable of supporting 2625 pound per tire which conveniently jives with your rear axle weight rating Or GAWR of 5250 pounds.
So even towing at max capacity a D rated tire is sufficient.
Ford had a safety recall about 9-10 years ago to get rid of the D rated tires and switched to E rated tires. I'd rather be safe with the E rated tires.

Here is the link. I ended up with a set of nice Steeltex 10 ply tires. They lasted a long time. But I always run with Load Range E or 10 ply tires. Not worth the risk

I certainly like the additional peace of mind that E rated tires give me when I am running heavy. Even if it is overkill, your tires aren't a bad place for it.
I am the original owner of my 2003 truck, so I benefited from the recall, I remember it.
Interestingly, I have ran the spare Firestone Steeltex wheel for the past 2 years (scissor blade went thru my BFG's), and it has not worn much. The BFG's have worn far quicker.

As long they aren't total crap, off brand, schit, WTF are you selling me rubbers.
They have different levels of confiidance, and protection.
Pro Comp Xtreme MT2 radial 37x12.5x17 Load Range "D" Max load per tire 3525 lbs. makes it about a 124 load index. Plus these tires have a three ply sidewall, unlike 99% of the tires recommended for the Ex.
I drive semi's for a living and would not even worry about running a "D" range tire on the Excursion, unless it was some off brand junk.
I had this same tire on my Dodge Diesel, but in a 35" tire, and towed a car hauler with another Dodge diesel on it, and the tires were barely squatting.

I also run a 37,
Should be noted that because of the volume a 37" @ 35 psi will support 2755 lbs each or 5510 total, right at the rear axles GAWR of 5250
