It appears as though the front main seal on my 2002 7.3 is leaking. I've been trying to look into how I'd go about replacing the seal but can't find much info online. Does anyone have any pointers?

How many miles on the engine? Here's why I ask. Think about a new Melling LPOP. It will come with a new seal. The Melling is considered an upgrade to the OEM LOOP.
Anyway, you'll need a harmonic balancer puller and a little RTV. The balancer bolt is plenty tight. Remove the serpentine belt, remove the belt pulley on the crank, remove the balancer bolt, install the puller, remove the balancer...now, you can remove the LPOP by removing 4 more bolts....or you can try to remove just the seal.
There is no need to remove the radiator though...things are tight, but you can maneuver the balancer out.
When you reinstall the balancer, you need a small dab of RTV behind the balancer bolt washer on the keyway....to prevent oil leakage.

It's only got 153k on it. I've had her about a year now. I know the old owner used it as a toy hauler but he seemed like a pretty straight shooter so I don't think he drove it irresponsibly. Was a single owner and adult owned its entire life.
I have a new Melling pump and Ford seal kit on the way. After doing some research on mostly old threads I have seen all sorts of methods to install the seal and wear ring. General consensus is that the special installation tool (303-761) is the best (and to many the only) way to do the job without fear of a recurring leak. But I hate to fork out $250 for a tool I hope to only used once. The best sounding alternative was to heat up the external parts and freeze the internal parts to have them slide together easier. Any input would be greatly appreciated. Also, if I do decide to heat the external parts, is there a point that would be too hot and damage the parts?
Actually now that I have looked more closely at the tool number it appears to be for a 6.0, not a 7.3
