no need to remove anything except balancer, you should be able to pop seal out with a large screw-driver (I assume your working on a sbf)

You will want to use a puller that bolts to the center (metal) section of the balancer. Any kind of three jaw puller around the outside ring (rubber) has the ability to pull the ring off of the metal center, which you don't want to do. I've been able to borrow one from the AutoZone tool program in the past.

the steering wheel puller should be of that type (center bolt with pt and main body with 4 slotted holes, three of them in a triangular shape)

One thing I learned a long time ago is to use the right tool for the job. If you don't, you end up buying a lot of tools and parts that you broke because you didn't use them right.

Also when you get the balancer off, check it fir a groove, much like and axle seal, if the seal has cut a groove in the balancer, get a repair sleeve for it, should still be available at any decent parts store.

the particular puller described can be purchased for less than $20.00, so it's cheap insurance

you need a crows foot to pull it. You shouldnt need to pull anything else off except for the fan. comes out easy, but installing the new one was a pain

time frame for removing the HB

I called two Ford garages and they both said it takes 2 hours to do the job, is that correct?

That probably includes tearing down enough of the engine to get to the balancer. Once you have everything off, the balancer is about a 10 minute job with the right tools.

Someone above said you don't need to remove anything to get to the hb. I have a 5.0, looks like the fan would be in the way.

Then I don't know why it would take two hours.
