What is a quick easy way to tell the difference between a 351M and 400M Ford engine? Also what is one of these engines worth that was running good when it was removed. Has an aluminum intake and Holley carburetor but the owner passed away and his estate doesn't know anything else about it.
Thanks Jerry

Reason: speeling
Check the stroke through the spark plug hole. Hard to say what they are worth really. Myself I wouldn't even pay for a 351M, a 400 I could see $300 or so for a unknown engine if it sounds good.
Well I can buy the engine for $150 and they will give me a transmission and transfer case off of it (or similar Ford) but I was hoping there was a quick way of figuring out what it was.
I don't think it makes a difference in price whether its a 351m or a 400. If the engine block is NOT from the "bad period" than it's worth $300-500 easy. Especially if they throw in an C6 transmissions and transfer case.
Like what has already been said. To figure out the stroke pull all the plugs this will make it much easier to turn over with a breaker bar on the front(I,m sure someone will say its only nessasary to pull ! plug) Use a piece of wire and put it in the hole and roll the engine over. Then you can determine the stroke.
If it has the original valve cover on the driver's side, it was printed on a sticker that contains all the information. But valve cover could have been swapped easily...
