351M/400 identification

I found an 351M/400 for sale and there are not a lot of them over here
so I am interested to buy. I dont know a lot about the condition of the engine in my own truck but I know it was once bored out so I was thinking of buying this engine as an extra just in case something happend with mine.
Casting number is D7TE-A2B and the "date tag" 6F1. I suppose I can't read out if it's a 351M or a 400? Anything else I have to think about if I want
to use it later on in my F150 4X4 -77 (400+C6)? I suppose you think this is waste og money but I was thinking because you can found almost any Ford engine over here except for 351M/400 it would be a good opportunity to buy this and avoid to have to import one later from U.S with huge shipping costs. I would really appreciate suggestions from you guys!!

I've had a few 351M/400's and I like that engine. Many others think it's good for an anchor, and that's about it.
To tell the difference between the two, you will have to take the engine apart and measure the stroke of the piston and crank. The 400 has a longer stroke, giving more usable cubic inch's.

I also like those engines...grab it if you can.
D7TE = it was cast in 1977, TE = truck engine.
Only difference between the 351M and the 400 is the crank and pistons. A 351M truck engine will have a 1K or 1KA stamped on the first crank counterweight while a 400 will have a 5M, 5MA or a 5MAB. A car crank will have the same digits depending on the year it was cast.

Most, not all 351M/400 blocks will have a 1" rib cast into the block in front of and to the right of the distributor....as looking at it head on.

If the engine looks sound and its a good price than I'd grab it. doesn't matter if it's a 351M or a 400, you can use it for parts or make it whatever you'd like if you wear out the 400 you've got now.

Thanks a lot for advices!! i think I will try to grab it!!!
Does all 351M/400 use the same bell housing
bolt pattern for 1977? Owner says it didn't fit his C6 with a FE pattern?
I suppose C6 in Our Trucks use a different 351M/400/460 pattern?
How could the casting number be D7TE for 1977 but date tag 6F1?? (1976??)

Engine block cast the first week (1) of June (F) 1976 (6).

By the time the block had 'seasoned' and been finished by the engine assembly plant, the 1977 model year had begun...as production began in August 1976.

Yes, all 351M/400 have the same bell pattern unless you have a rare one with the 351C pattern. Unlikely though. They also share the same pattern with the 385 series engines - 429 and 460.

The FE series bell is a completely different animal than the 351M/400 and won't fit.
