E4OD Replacement
Resurrecting a 1994 F150 XL extended cab with the 4.9L. Ordered a crate engine and considering ordering a new E4OD also. I've heard you have to pull the 4.9 out of the truck to change the E4OD transmission. Is this true on the 94s with the 4.9/E4OD combo? Or is a transmission swap later on easier to do than I'm thinking? FYI, the 4.9 has bad main bearings and rusty crankcase as though it has been receiving coolant for years. Still runs though. Transmission seems to be ok currently but certainly isn't new. Has unknown number of miles on the truck but suspect lots of miles.

I can't believe you would have to remove the engine to replace the transmission. If your current transmission is working well I would just change the fluid in it and hope for the best. You never know what you would get in a rebuilt transmission, and I doubt you could get a NEW one. Just my opinion.

The e4od is a stout transmission that lives very long behind low power engines like the i6, 5.0, and even the 5.8.
If it shifts good, just change the fluid at normal intervals until it dies. If something goes wrong with the transmission, don't assume it needs a rebuild. Most of the problems with this Trans are sensor related.
