Can't get a socket on the glowplug

Replacing glowplugs today. Passenger head closest to the firewall is giving me issues. I can't get the socket on there. Can't even get a short one on it. I read to turn the engine by hand. I've done that at least a half rotation. I wasn't sure how much I was supposed to. Any suggestions?

1/4" drive 10 mm deep socket just to loosen it, not extract it. I then grab a piece of 5/16" semi-rigid fuel line (straight hard plastic) that I bought at the Chinese car parts store with the Irish name. Insert the plastic tube over the electrical contact of the glow plug, and spin it out by hand.

I use a slightly modified deep well socket, ( I ground down the outside of the socket, (minimally) and was able to service the plugs much easier, Take care when removing, you can get wedged up against portions of the mechanical components, (this can cause damage that is expensive to correct) There are several suggestions on removal from using small gas line tubing, (once broken loose) to using penetration fluid to soak the threads and aid in removal once broken loose, (you don't want to break the barrel of the plug, if it gets stuck it will be difficult but not impossible to remove) I just replaced all eight on my 01 and was lucky that all but two came out easily, Just remember that if you feel firm resistance, or your socket starts to come in contact with the adjacent metal (rocker arm assembly) they can be bent folded and / or mutilated,

I used a 3/8" drive 10mm deep well socket to break them loose and a piece of vacuum hose I had lying around to back them all the way out, just like Rich said. I think it was the same hose I used for the vacuum lines to the front hub. It was a snug fit over the top but it was tight enough to spin it.

Do NOT back the plug all the way out with the socket unless you remove the rocker arms and have clearance to back it out straight. Otherwise you'll bend the tip of the plug and make it difficult to get out.

I used a 1/4" drive 10 mm deep socket just to break them loose then a 1/4" drive 11 mm 6 point deep socket to spin them out. This allowed the socket to "wobble" on the glowplug and clear everything. Install just the opposite 11 to spin down the 10 to torque.

I bought a 3/8 drive yesterday cuz I couldn't find a 10mm deepwell 1/4 inch. I wish I had thought to get a 1/4 drive. I'll be in town anyhow to get other stuff so I'll just grab one then.

I already had some 5/16 fuel line, not from the Irish store tho so I'm not sure how legit it is. . .

I figured the stuff around it could be damaged that's why I just stopped and tried to research what other people did. I've got 3 out so far, they've been pretty easy up to this point.

Well I got a 1/4 drive and it still wasn't working. Got a light and a camera down there and there was a piece of plastic broke off of the wiring harness stuck down there. That did it

That's GOOD NEWS! Means the work you are doing now should have a MAJOR impact on your truck

Just be sure to get all the pieces of everything out of there and nothing down in the motor

You're doing OEM glow plugs, right? Also doing the injector orings with Alliant parts and a new UVCH? I use the Dorman UVCH with the integrated gasket.

These things have a big impact on the reliability and performance of our trucks as they age.

Good luck and keep up the good work

Yeah I found a couple pieces.

I did get OEM from Riffraff. I haven't thought to do On rings. But I'm kinda in the mindset of "if it ain't broke I'm not touching it". They are working right now and if I ever pull injectors it would be to out better ones in.

I'm undecided about valve gaskets and harnesses. I recently put new in. I have 1 extra harness I keep in my truck and I have 2 "new" ones I could put in. But I'm skeptical on the quality of them.

I wasn't going to touch my injectors either, but I was glad I did. A couple of them came out intact but most of the o-rings came out in pieces.

They're not difficult at all to remove or install. Read through the PDF on Riff Raff's site on the job (LINK).

If you have the valve covers off, you're already there.

Do it!

Yeah you're right. Although the more I think about it, I should just drop some injectors in. I've got the cash sitting around. And like you said I'm right there. IDK. I could justify about $1800. . .

Do it now or do it later... If you have the time and money, do it now...

I would have already done mine, but coming up with the money for new PIS 160/80 injectors is a bit tough right now. I also want to pair them up with a new KC38R turbo.

well I guess I have the time. Id rather have all the downtime right now. And like I said I have the cash. I really only have fuel, insurance, and a cell phone bill as my monthly expenses. I turn 18 next month so I still have all the other stuff provided ATM which makes it easier to stow money for stuff like that.

Is that what you'd do is PIS? I'm thinking 160/30. Haven't decided between PIS, Full Force, baby swamps, and someone turned me onto rosewood. I may start a different thread and see what people recommend

I would take a hard look at the 160/80's instead of the 160/30's, a lot of people it seems regret not making that extra jump on their new injectors.

Also, had to order a 12 point socket to finish the turbo. That's coming tomorrow so I can hopefully finish painting and get it rebuilt this weekend
