Hello, I have a 03 f250 6.0... been taking several times to start only in the morning. Typically 3 times. If I keep the key in the on position for 1 to 3 minutes prior to turning then 1st time in crank it then it will start. Was thinking maybe glow plugs or module? Any help is appreciated
Some data I can read on my Bluetooth scanner.. my ficm is always 48+ .. hpop always 600+. Ipr is 23. Hot.. and only has issues in the morning. After it's first started it always starts through out the day and hot or not it runs great. Once it sits over night and then morning comes around is when issues start
I thought it was loosing prime from oil filter, so I took out filter and held down anti drain back valve. Had a friend crank and oil rushes up. No bubbles
but oil still drains down while I have valve pushed down. Put new valve in and still drains. Not sure if that's normal or has anything to do with my issue
Typically when the glow plugs are not turned on the volts drop to the low 12s.
Typically when the glow plugs are engaged the volts drop into the mid 11's.
A good clue some or all of the glow plugs are not working.
An uncommon problem but if the EOT (and even the Baro sensor) aren't reading correctly, the glow plugs may not turn on. Verify the EOT value after a cold soak. Also, please post the Baro reading.
EOT over 131 *F and the glow plugs won't operate (as I understand the controls).
Would glow plugs really matter much if its above freezing?
Or do glow plugs light up at any ambient temp no matter what?
Makes a huge difference even at 50*
Replaced the module on kids truck after it failed, after he told me it took forever to start it cold after school...it was 48* that day. Not that warm but certainly not cold either.
Smoked like an old train in notch 8 after it fired from all that extra fuel.
Volts is not the greatest way to check for glow plug output. But they turn on below 130 and make a difference. They are operational not only for starting but to improve cool running and emissions. Even one not working can make for hard starting. It may not be your main issue but look at your voltage closer when starting. Once the engine starts the alternator should slowly bring the voltage up, especially after the deeper drop of the starter.
Ok, tommorrow morning after sitting I will update my volts prior start aswell as anything else I can read on torque pro..thank you very much. Been fighting this 6.0 issue for while now. Hopefully can get her figured out
* navis... thing is that truck only has has issues in the morning. After I get off work it always starts right up. Only smokes sometimes after trying to start up to 3 times. Once running it's fine and starts good till the next morning... torque pro has option for volts, baro and EOT so will update after I get off work and first thing tomorrow morning
