So today I am driving it was a pretty long drive and I noticed one headlight was out so I went into Walmart get the new bulbs and I look and smell my battery boiling from the drive I didn't run her hard well to hard those canyon hills are stupid but she was smoking and it sounded like she was going to blow up but I took my time and managed to limp her home can anyone shed some light in this as I am brand new to idi and mechanic work as o am a tree guy
It was getting really hot and the smell of rotten eggs the sulphur and you could see it steaming really bad and getting so dann hot that it was kind ****ed up had to limp my truck home
Check the liquid level inside the battery. It could be very low.
Also check the alternator output. If you are overcharging the batteries that can overheat them and cook them pretty fast.
This is also incredibly dangerous. You really don't want a battery to explode in your face!!!!
disconnect the suspect battery and measure the voltage cold after filling with distilled water, if low. it should be 12.2 to 12.8 volts. If it's low connect to a slow charger 2-3 amps. If it doesn't charge the battery is bad and you have shorted cells that caused the boiling. THat can be a very dangerous and potentially explosive.
First check alternator / regulator output voltage when running that can overcharge the battery and kill it. even if one battery is still good. The question is also is this an older model with a separate regulator or is the regulator built into the alternator.
You mentioned a light was out? Could there have been a short causing a problem with the light out and the battery boiling? check the wires around the battery and headlight?
If there is a bad cell, then that will hog all the juice and the good battery will never charge. eventually, that dead cell can kill a good battery connected to it since the bad battery will pull the voltage down from the good battery.
The solution is pull both batteries and individually trickle charge them. Once done and resting several hours, check the voltage on both batteries. they should be the same. If they are .2 volts apart or more then they are not matched. THey should both read around 12.8 Volts.
