Due to auto accident Highway Patrol, who was metering traffic, flagged me down asking for a lift to the accident scene, she opened the door and all my 'stuff' rolling around the cab floor and seat ended up on the ground. Once she tossed all the 'stuff' back in the cab I gave her a lift. Long time issue when shopping, what to do with the 'stuff'?
Searched and have not been able to located a storage box for the 'flareside' that sets on the rails and does not extend beyond the width of the cab? Possible alternative, have a box cut and weld to fit; seems it would be expensive? Thought I would check with members for possible source before exploring the other alternaive?
Although it wouldn't help with the width of the box, I have considered the possibility of a triangular wedge to square up the space between the top of the rail and the bottom of a regular toolbox. I'm a long ways off of doing anything like this, just an idea rollin around with the other "stuff".
It's a short bed and was hoping to install a storage box across the rails so I can still carry material that require the use of the full length of the bed??
Been giving the wedge shaped gap some thought, there's the option of taking a piece of 4x4 wood and cutting a wedge to fit, then cut to desired width? Another option I been considering, should I find a box, is taking 2 cheap wheel blocks and cutting to fit, 2 on ea. side placed at the front and rear of the box. Seem to recall finding site offering variety of shapes and size ridged plastic, to include wedge shapes, in different lengths. Once locate a box next will involve some cyber searching in attempt to locate the ridged plastic filler, or continue to looking into other alternative??
Toss the factory crap and buy some cleats from US Cargo or similar vendor. You can use the same cleats/tie downs that all of the trailer track systems use. I have four with rings on them and they go in and out with no issue and I have a thick BedRug liner that runs up the sides of the bed. Do not leave them in unless you like the sound of wind chimes.
Between these removable cleats and the factory lower corner brackets I can tie anything into the bed with ease. When it is time to load I grab the bag from behind the seat, install the four rings, get the tie downs out of the bag, strap down and go.

I would like to see a picture or 2 of what you talk of "cleats"?
Then you say "Between these removable cleats and the factory lower corner brackets" what factory corner brackets?
And "grab the bag from behind the seat" I think they have the gas tank back there so no room for much or I was going to say behind the seat storage rack like below that I have in my 81 F100 flare side.
It is held in with Velcro to the back wall so if I need to remove it I can.
Now to the old OP question, I don't really have a answer but if looking for a bed storage box and don't want it to stick out over the bed side rails (flare side) I would look at some of the mini truck boxes.
I would measure what you have now, inside the box and to the top rails, then go looking in parking lots for trucks that might have the same dimensions.
Once you have a truck make & model go looking for a box to fit and take measurements to see if it will work for you. Lund 79310 63" Cross Bed Truck Tool Box Black Aluminum NEW
I don't know if this would fit or not but what I am talking of.

Not sure, ff looking for a bed storage box I could not find a box that fit w/out extending too far over the bed rails. I purchased a store bought box for my Flare-side bed that fits between the rails and either mounts to the floor, or in my case I installed 'L' shaped brackets to lift the box a few inches above the floor, came in handy when carrying drywall or plywood. Later came across a box, Rigid, that also set between the rails but seemed it set a bit too high and not sure I could use the space between the legs.
Hauled a load of sand, aint pretty and about time for its annual bath?
No I am not looking for a box.
I also have a box that fits a style side bed that came off my parts truck but got bent up in the roll over.
I have started to straighten but being I don't need one it is just sitting. I also think like you it would hang over the sides.
I also see your rails are not flat like mine are and that could be an issue if you could find one like I posted unless you made wedges between box and rail and the under side of rail for the bolts to go thru to hold it in place.
Load of sand! I don't know if I would use my truck to haul sand / dirt but use it to haul the trash to the dump each week LOL
Someone at the dump once told me if a truck looks to nice it will not be used. Guess I have a limit LOL
