I was noticing some bump steer in my new '16 F250 (310 miles). So I bought a Bilstein steering stabilizer to replace the "low bidder wins" factory horizontal shock absorber, oops, I mean steering stabilizer.
When putting the Bilstein on, I stripped the frame mounted bracket. What a POS. Looks like it was made of cast iron powder glued together with Elmer's. I ran a tap down the hole, but there was nothing to rethread. No shavings like you normally see when threading a hole. Threads had ground to a powder and were falling out of the hole like crumbs from a cookie.
So I bought a new bracket. Fortunately, the new bracket was only $11.
$11.
For a brand new bracket.
Genuine Ford.
From a Ford dealer.
Does that speak to the quality of the part? You cannot hardly buy a Ford-branded shop towel for $11.
Had the Bilstein off, bracket replaced and Bilstein back on in 25 minutes.
Still. What a pain.
Hey! Be careful out there.
BTW- I cannot say that my bump steer is gone, but it is a lot less noticeable. A highly recommended upgrade.
Not really, why are the new diesel on-frame filter housings so cheap? Ive had to replace a broken one at work and i think our cost was like 12 bucks from our local ford dealer
I am not making any excuse for operator error, but I suspect that the threads on the original part where not cut very well. The factory boys ram the bolt in with an air or electric gun and would never notice it.
