I think what 84 was getting at was that the line to your coil runs through a ballast resistor and is only 7-9 volts when running. New style coils (and presumably your HEI) will want the full 12v.

Correct. Also, concerning clearance, I was thinking of my 460 and not the 400. Those were the clearance issues I had.
